Social Justice Team at St. Francis collected 800 Socks In Support of ToastyToes Mandate

Social Justice Team members at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School collected over 800 pairs of socks, raising an additional $300, in support of the ToastyToes Guelph mandate.

ToastyToes Guelph has traditionally provided new warm socks for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Guelph, which help reduce health complications, prevent frostbite, reduce bacteria and fungus, as well as prevent skin and nail infections.

In learning about the cause behind the campaign, the Social Justice Team members stepped up and decided to show their support.

“Many people experiencing homelessness suffer from cold during this time of year,” shared Lucy Dupuis, grade 8 student at St. Francis. “So it is extremely important to have socks which tend to be neglected donation item.”

“And especially in Canada it can be extra difficult during the winter months,” added Lucy Nash, also in grade 8 at St. Francis.

Organizing a school-wide campaign, the Social Justice Team members exceeded expectations with their donation.

While the Social Justice Team at St. Francis is still in infancy, its important for students of all ages to assist members of the community here in Guelph.

“I think that we can always find people in need in the city of Guelph and it’s important for students who have a roof over their heads and clean socks to understand the importance of helping the less fortunate living in the same community as us,” teacher and administrative support to the student Social Justice Team, Tanya Murphy, shared.

The socks and donations will be delivered later this week and shared with those experiencing homelessness in Guelph this winter.
